Second Pride Web Domains Empty Second Pride Web Domains

I would like to make a proposal to the committee regarding the Secondpride.com and secondpridefestival.com domains. As you know a couple weeks ago we ascertained full administrative rights to both the domains. Secondpride.com is owned and hosted by a company called forumotion. With the current setup we have, in order to have a basic homepage for the site, there is a lot of HMTL coding manipulation that must occur. Which is unreliable, cumbersome, and unecessary. We are unable to create any sub-domains or have secondpride.com emails for any ambassadors or committee members because of a 10 mailbox limit.

Secondpridefestival.com was created through google apps which allows the committee to have individualized emails (up to 50) and docs for each committee member. With the way the 2 domains are setup, the committee does not have any control over DNS records and we do not have the capability to create sub-domains and use different hosting solutions for various reasons. What I am proposing is a merger of the two domains in a sense.

What I we would do is request a domain transfer code for secondpride.com from forumotion. This code is free and it will allow us to take secondpride.com and register it with a 3rd party registrar giving us full access and control over the name and who we choose to host with. My goal is to transfer secondpride.com to a registrar so we may create sub-domains such as www.secondpride.com and forums.secondpride.com, etc. A sub-domain allows us to create anything.secondpride.com and that name in front of secondpride.com can be hosted through different sources. I am not proposing we delete or drop the forums in their entirety. I believe the forums have great value to this committee and the community at-large. However, I am open to researching a different forum provider, due to limitations and recent major technical difficulties. Part of the goal here is to move all email accounts to secondpride.com and find a hosting solution for our website that does not require HTML coding and can easily continue with upcoming committee's without any technical background required. This would allow us to streamline the secondpride.com name with emails and documents belonging to secondpride.com and dropping the unnecessary secondpridefestival.com. I will be putting together 2 proposals over the course of this coming week. The proposal will outline various web hosting solutions and the benefits vs consequences of the proposed solution. My proposals will be posted here for the community at-large to view and comment on. If anyone has a recommendation for a solution I should look into, I welcome it.

A domain name search reveals the following information regarding registration of the secondpride.com domain (NOTE: Although this information is freely available by searching on any Domain Name Search page on the Internet, I am substituting 'John Doe' for the real Registrant's name, AND I have removed parts of the address):

Registrant:
John Doe
*address removed*
*address removed*
Switzerland

Registered through: GoDaddy.com, Inc. (http://www.godaddy.com)
Domain Name: SECONDPRIDE.COM
Created on: 22-Sep-08
Expires on: 22-Sep-10
Last Updated on: 24-Aug-09

Administrative Contact:
Doe, John ****@gmail.com
*address removed*
*address removed*
Switzerland
*phone # removed*

Technical Contact:
Doe, John *****@gmail.com
*address removed*
*address removed*
Switzerland
*phone # removed*

Domain servers in listed order:
NS1.FORUMOTION.COM
NS2.FORUMOTION.COM

Forumotion does not own the secondpride.com domain. According to a PDF I found on Google, John Doe is credited with organizing "a Pride Festival in the virtual world of “Second Life.” He's also the registered domain name owner for secondpride.com. So, it's safe to assume Mr. Doe used to be connected to Second Pride. I'm sure someone here must know his Second Life name.

There are two pieces of information from the above domain name search that are of particular interest. First, as of 24-Aug-2009, Mr. Doe is still listed as the registered owner. Second, GoDaddy is the domain name provider. Are you saying you obtained exclusive access rights from Mr. Doe to his GoDaddy user account or did he transfer the domain to you? If so, when did he do it?

Also, please forgive me, but I'm not understanding the part of your post where you talk about a domain transfer code of secondpride.com from forumotion. From whom are you going to request this code? Honestly, I'm more than a little confused by your post. I do network administration in real life, so, it makes more sense to me that, at some point in the past, Mr. Doe, logged on to the GoDaddy Account Manager and made the necessary changes to point secondpride.com to forumotion. It stands to reason that the current owner should be able to do the same thing (and more, like sub-domains) to accommodate a new forum provider.

NOTE: Upon request, I have edited this post to substitute 'John Doe' for the actual registered name for this domain.

Either it is or is not disclosure under Second Life's Community Standards, but you don't seem to take a position. Frankly, I don't see that it's relevant in the context of Second Pride's forum. For that matter, was that all you got out of my post? First, if John Doe did not want this information in the real life public domain, he should have registered with a service that would have shielded his real life identity and location. By the way, there's no guarantee that it is even is his real name, but that wasn't the point.

Anyone can go to any domain name search page and get the same information by just typing in the domain. You can do the same with the secondpridefestival.com domain. So, respectfully, I maintain that I haven't disclosed anything regarding Mr. Doe's real life location that he hasn't already disclosed himself in real life!

Second, as I clearly stated in my post, I personally do not know Mr. Doe's Second Life identity. If you or someone else know this person's SL name, that's your business.

Third, I haven't posted any of this information on Second Life or Second Life's forum.

My hope was we could discuss the information I hoped would actually be relevant to the thread's subject.

Hi, Gordon.

Likely this is not my business but I think that any of us would find it unnerving to have our real life information posted so casually. The climate around gay rights is such that you might seriously be jeapordizing him, and, that, respectfully, is not your right. I'm certain that it is not your intent either.

Your message is lost in that one detail. Perhaps if you edited that information, the message would be made more clear.

Thank you for considering this request.

Your point is well taken, but I do not agree with your assertion that I might have jeopardized him in some way. The Internet is an unfiltered medium and we must always be careful what we disclose on websites and on-line publications.

Nevertheless, I have edited my posts by substituting 'John Doe' for the registrant's registered name. Although this information and other information is freely available on the Internet, it was never my intention to violate this person's privacy.

My point was to try and shed some light on the true owner of the domain and get some discussion, perhaps clarification, on Isaiah's original post.

You know Gordon you could have said what you wanted to say
with a lot less arrogance by simply saying, "Hey Isaiah, I ran a quick
domain registry search and came up with a different owner for secondpride.com
other than forumotion. I am a bit confused, would you care to
explain?" In stead you choose to write a comment that makes you look
like you're literally jumping up and down in your chair pointing your finger
calling me a liar. I found the context of your statement to be
unprofessional, distasteful, and uninviting. Though you may be correct
with your technical explanation, my post was a vague overview of how the domain
operates. Yes, Secondpride.com is registered to a person, the same person
who has owned the domain name since its inception. This person also
renewed the domain in August of 09. Secondpride.com may be registered
through GoDaddy, Inc but it is fully managed by Forumotion and they do not
allow us to have any control over the DNS records. Secondpride.com was
purchased through Forumotion after the forum was created, not in the
traditional since that you or I may be familiar with. According to Forumotion,
whoever has the username and password to the "founders" account owns
the domain. In order to release the domain to be transferred the "founder"
must PM tech support and ask for a domain transfer code. This domain
transfer code may then be used to take secondpride.com to a 3rd party registrar
such as register.com. Once the domain is transferred, we may then update
the owners contact information as well as create as many sub-domains as we
wish. The purpose of this discussion post was not to debate the technical
layout of secondpride.com, but rather to share ideas on how to make the
secondpride experience better for the community. I was elected as
Marketing Chair and chosen by the committee to run and operate the
domains. Given my own technical background in RL, I am fully qualified
and capable of managing web domains. I would have expected to receive a
little more faith from you in my ability to do my job and trust that you would
expect me to do my research and have all the facts prior to making a proposal
of domain migrations.

*please do not respond regarding this matter. I will not
turn this into a debate. If you have any further technical questions, I
respectfully ask you ask them respectfully. If you have anything you feel will
contribute to making the secondpride.com experience better, I am all ears.

You don't receive trust until you earn it. The first part of your post is a great example of what is wrong with SecondPride.
You know Gordon you could have said what you wanted to say
with a lot less arrogance by simply saying, "Hey Isaiah, I ran a quick
domain registry search and came up with a different owner for secondpride.com
other than forumotion. I am a bit confused, would you care to

like you're literally jumping up and down in your chair pointing your finger
calling me a liar. I found the context of your statement to be
unprofessional, distasteful, and uninviting.

I didn't call anybody a liar, but I suspect the Committee is so used to that, its members naturally jump to that conclusion. If your first few sentences were meant to demonstrate a less arrogant, professional, tasteful, and inviting response to a general member of SecondPride, you failed. I'll remind you that Committee members answer to the membership as a whole, not just the handful of 20+ people that actually voted for you. I submit that you have forgotten that fact.

Your original post was very vague and almost incoherent, and I resent the fact that you thought that's all you had to provide us when you invited discussion.

*please do not respond regarding this matter. I will not
turn this into a debate. If you have any further technical questions, I
respectfully ask you ask them respectfully. If you have anything you feel will
contribute to making the secondpride.com experience better, I am all ears.

So, the all-powerful Committee member has spoken and will not allow debate even though he created the thread for discussion, which is analagous to debate. Again, that must be your way of showing me the better way to come across. But, there will be no further debate. Friend, you don't have to worry about debate. I'm done. This member is out of here.

Gordon Nadezda

P.S. The original person who created the domain name account is no longer a member of Second Pride, and dropped out recently. That's a curious fact.........

hey Issy
I have no recommendations, rather, just wanted to say, given the amount of "trouble" there has been while connected to forumotion, I think it's a great idea to migrate. Also, the limitations involved ie: email limits hampers us somewhat which is not ideal. One thing I'm not clear on.....who exactly would the "owner" of SP website then be?

Effective immediately I would like to begin the necessary first steps to a full domain migration. The process involved is as follows:

1. Request a domain transfer code from Forumotion
2. Register a new account at register.com and order a domain transfer of secondpride.com. The cost of this transfer is $14.95
3. The domain transfer will take up to 7 days, but has an average of 24-48 hours.
4. Once the transfer is complete I will then create a pointer record for www.secondpride.com to point to http://secondpride.virtuaboard.com.
http://secondpride.virtuaboard.com is the original forum address of secondpride.com and will still exist upon the transfer of domain name.

Meaning, no current changes to secondpride.com will occur. Everything will remain the way it is now. By transferring the domain name to register.com we gain full control over the DNS entries. This will allow us to create a free google apps account using secondpride.com which will provide us with up to 50 email addresses.

Once the committee agrees to a new web hosting service, all we do is modify the www DNS entry and point it to the new service. The site will automatically change over during a 24-48 hour period. However, there will be no downtime during this transition when it occurs, because the old site as well as the new site will be fully functional. Essentially until the www change takes effect it will remain pointed to the existing site, and once it is complete it will change over to the new site.

My apologies Eagle, I didn't see the last part of your question. The web domains must be registered to a single individual no matter which registrar we choose. But one of the great things about register.com (others may do this as well) is say for example we proceed transferring the domains out. I would provide my RL contact info then in June once the elections have been completed, I log into register.com and I transfer at no cost the secondpride.com domain to the new Marketing Chair.

During the Ad-Hoc, one thing I will propose to the committee is an addition to the charter detailing this procedure for the Marketing Chair.
